Stoppers made of natural cork are donated to the local Ridwell recycling company who in tern donates them to the Jelinek Cork Group who grinds them and re-makes them into useful items such as flooring, wall tiles, bulletin boards, etc. Year to date, members have collected 1,147 corks.
Books no longer wanted are placed in the club's Little Free Library on NE First Street. Others are given to Friends of the Battle Ground Community Library's "Ben's Books," the used book store in the library. Especially welcome are children's books and current novels.
All kinds of pull tabs, any colors are sent to Ronald McDonald House, a free home away from home for loved ones with a child under serious treatment in a nearby hospital. There is now a Ronald McDonald House in the Portland/Vancouver area.
Members save toiletries from hotel and motel stays and give them to the Battle Ground Education Foundation which finds homes for them through the Community and Family Resource Center on the former Lewisville school campus.
All kinds of eyeglasses and lenses are saved for the Battle Ground Lions Club to help others see better, an international effort.
Members bring an array of small "free stuff" in good condition that the donor no longer needs or wants, but hopefully, another member could use or enjoy. (clothing, decor, household, etc.)
Club members also save:
• Clean plastic produce grocery bags for "shoppers" at the Battle Ground Food Bank
• Greeting cards to a group that recycles them into "new" items
